How To Get An Inexpensive Merchant Account

Non-US Merchant Account

Looking for a non-us merchant account? You're in luck. There are more options today than ever.

There are plenty of ISOs like Durango Merchant Services that are based in the US but don't require either a US address or US incorporation.

In fact, such services that offer non-US merchant account don't really care where you are.

Of course, each nation has corporations focusing on just the banking industry in that nation. That's why I make the suggestion to do a nation specific search (search box below).

Regardless, here are some questions you should ask before committing to a service that provides a non-US merchant account.

  • Are you willing to put everything in writing, including all fees?
  • What is the name and location of the processing bank
  • Do you provide 24/7 support over the phone? (If so, and they should, test it out.)
  • Is a reserve account required? (If the answer is yes, look elsewhere unless you're business is located out of the US in which case a reserve account will most likely be required.)
  • When will funds be available? (Look for 3 days or less)
  • Are the banks you are partnered with to issue merchant accounts FDIC-Insured?
Another service based in the UK is PayLane.

For more, type "Merchant Account" + a specific nation in the search box below.

What is inexpensive?!

An inexpensive merchant account is...
  • Not bigger than you are.
If you are small, you don't need all the bells and whistles. Online only? You may not even need a merchant account of your own yet!
  • Competitively priced.
Why not just the cheapest? Fees matter, of course, but remember a bad provider can be the most expensive of all if it ties up your funds, has poor products and support, or goes out of business.
  • Well-known and respected.
See above. Charge.com has been around since 1996 and received a number of accolades.
  • Free to apply for and setup.
This industry is too competitive to require application fees.

Competitive pricing:*

internet/mail/phone
2.25% discount rate
25 cent transaction fee
Retail (face-to-face)
1.85% discount rate
25 cent transaction fee
Gateway fee
$17 month
Statement/service fee
$10 month

If you are considering several merchant accounts and the prices are in this range, stop using price to compare. It's time to compare service, support, features, etc. Look beyond price.

*These rates are taken from Charge.com.
